KANU'S (PAPILLO)TESTIMONIAL MATCH.....PICTURES AND SUMMARY

I SHED TEARS, WHAT A WAY TO RETIRE, well, The Event was colourful, though i couldnt attend due to studio work, i was working on my Tv Sport show,,,,,Kanu is a man after my heart, hes a philantropist though 'some greedy journalists' tagged him as being stingy which i think he isnt..I want to say Kanu will be hard to replace in the Super Eagles Squad.

IN KANU'S WORD AT THE TESTIMONIAL SHOW.
“Honestly, I wanted to keep playing but just could not keep up with challenges anymore. I enjoyed my years in the game and my only wish as I bow out finally is that the Super Eagles should start winning trophies again.

“We can only call our team Super if we are winning trophies. Trophies are what determine the success of a team and the fact that we have not won trophies since 1994, it is a clear indication of where our football is. The only way I can enjoy this retirement is for the team to start winning trophies.

Kanu, whose international career spanned from 1994-2010, said that the decision to retire international football, which brought him so much fame and joy, did not come easy because of the passion which he attaches to the round leather game. He admitted that he wanted to keep playing for Nigeria but his body was unable to carry the challenges.
Nigerian football international, Kanu Nwankwo officially celebrated his exit from international football with a testimonial match which took place in Lagos, Nigeria. According to the BBC, over 14000 fans braved rainy weather to watch their hero Kanu play alongside many of Africa’s greatest football stars including Jay Jay Okocha, Samuel Eto’o and Emmanuel Adebayor. Other stars on the pitch included Danny Shittu, Sulley Muntari, Rigobert Song, Emmanuel Eboue, Kalu Uche, Jean Makoun, Khalilou Fadiga, Anthony Baffoe, Sammy Kuffour, George Boateng, Joseph Yobo, Taye Taiwo, Herman Hreidarsson, Obinna Nsofor, Ikechukwu Uche and Yakubu Ayegbeni. Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola also made an appearance and hit the pitch in a Super Eagles jersey.

In the end, the Super Eagles beat a Rest of the World XI (Friends of Kanu team) – 3-1. Kanu played for both sides during the different halves of the match. He scored for the Super Eagles side.

After the match, Kanu made an emotional speech, he said “There’s a time to start and a time to finish, it has been a fulfilling ride from day one“. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Kanu Heart Foundation, the non-profit organization founded by Kanu which provides free life-saving heart surgery to underprivileged people with life threatening heart conditions.
