Former world champion athlete, Liz McColgan, assaulted her estranged husband,

The 47 year-old, who was the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1991, repeatedly punched Peter McColgan in the head and body, the court heard.

She faces a further charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner when she threw her husband’s clothes down the stairs and out of a window at their home in Carnoustie, Angus. She denied the charges at Arbroath Sheriff Court.

The alleged attack on July 12 came eight months after the couple announced an “amicable” separation.

Despite the break-up, they continued to share the family home for the sake of their five children.
